Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brother (Super Mario World)

The Amazing Flyin’ Hammer Brother was my first acrylic piece and the first piece I got up in any sort of public area. I had used a few different paste recipes I had found online and managed to make something that worked decently well. The high from getting a piece up and driving past it was only curtailed by someone tagging over it a few weeks later.

I had a mixed bag of emotions with the defacement. Anger that someone put some really shitty doodles over it and elation that someone felt the need to fuck with it. It’s all part of the game and I think having it defaced so early helped me get over the hangups about this sort of stuff later on.

Mog (Final Fantasy VI)

I started this project in early June of 2024. This would have been the second piece I hand painted with acrylics and most likely took 20-30 hours. Final Fantasy VI was a a very big part of my early video game experiences. My brothers and I would create binders full of information as we progressed through the game and at one point we were grounded from playing games before school due to needing “just a few more minutes” to beat a boss in Figaro castle.

This is my first foray into wheat pasting. Ever since moving to Austin in 2020 I had been enamoured with the street art scene. Stickers, murals, tags, graffiti, wheat pastes, I loved it all. In particular near my apartment I would always see pieces by three specific artists, Angry Cloud, Smack, and TV Head.

One day I finally said fuck it, I’m going to figure out how to do this. I don’t think of myself as being a very creative person so after finding and following the aforementioned artists I reached out and asked for advice on how to proceed. I have found the Austin art community to be wildly friendly and open to sharing ideas, space, and time. Having no sense of how to cut stencils, what the negative space should be, or any idea of how to make glue I waddled through the process and eventually got something up in an area almost no one would see.
